In a strongly worded statement issued on May 10, 2000, the fathers of the Maronite Church gave their strong tacit support to Muhamad Mugraby's position on integrity within the Lebanese judiciary.
According to the Beirut Daily Star (May 11, 2000):
"Referring to Mohammed Moghrabi, a human-rights activist who faces legal action for publicly questioning the integrity of some judges, the bishops said: "The judiciary, which should remain free from bias and political interference, should have investigated Moghrabi’s claims before deciding to prosecute him."
The bishops affirmed that the judiciary should remain above all suspicions and away from all political pressures. It criticized the prosecution of Dr. Mugraby because he pointed the finger at the zones of error in the Lebanese administration and especially in the judiciary.
This morning Dr. Mugraby was privately received by Cardinal Patriarch Sfeir and he thanked him for the declaration of the Church Fathers.
