Catastrophic Choices for Lebanon
CGGL Editorial Staff
8/1/2000

The fact that Lebanon is governed by a bunch of incompetent, impotent and/or ignorant individuals, who are also surrogates of a foreign power, Syria, cannot be denied. Some of the ministers qualify for all three "eyes" with high distinction. Some qualify for only two of the three. Yet others also earned an additional big C for corruption. Hence the highest scoring of these sorrowful individuals qualifies for a ranking of "IIIC".

For example, Minister of Finance Mr. George Corm may not have earned any Cs but he certainly deserves a big triple I which he must share with his boss, Prime Minister Hoss, for their bad handling of the country's economy and public finances. The country is limping on a budget deficit of near 60% and all revenues collected by the government are less than sufficient to pay for the interest due on the astronomical public debt.

Yes, the public debt was accumulated by the mismanagement of the earlier bunch of the incompetent, the impotent, the ignorant and the corrupt, led by former prime minister Mr. Rafik Hariri. But while the "new" government continues to blame the worsening economic and fiscal conditions on Hariri, it has consistently followed the Hariri policies in every way.

The country needs and deserves good governance. Such governance must be led by the qualified, the competent and the brave Lebanese. It is very sad indeed, but the choice between the likes of Hariri and Murr and the likes of Hoss and Corm is no longer acceptable to the Lebanese.
